Crossin' Fingers
04:23
|
|||
it's late at night
i let the phone ring and ring
but no one picks up
i try to pretend
you must be asleep
i try to convince myself
but I know where you are
and I know you're with him
there ain't no secrecy
i read all your diaries
well I know he's more than a friend
hey, lovin' ain't lyin' and lyin' ain't lovin'
you say "it's true, I swear to you"
but you're crossin' fingers again
it's later now
i stare at the ceiling fan
and I follow the blades
and I wish you were dead
or it was a dream
the two of you together
but I'm not asleep
there's a pain in my head
i'm an unworthy student of philosophy
my arguments won't change a thing
i mail you proofs everyday
and there's no doubt that you should stay
but you'll do what you wanna do
and i know that you'll go away
jealousy, is what saved me
from believing the lies, from doubting the truth
jealousy, it's what saved me

Smokestack
04:53
|
|||
we went to the cape
the summer had passed
there were off-season rates
the smokestack we adored
sat and blew smoke
like never before
up into the atmosphere
where the sky is blue and clear
and every plane's a little stain
our wipers wiped away the acid rain
and when i came back it had wasted away
by it i mean most of the best part of day
i promise to quit if you promise to stay
you packed up your shit my life remained the same
the same...

Bathroom

and you stumbled into the bathroom
and laid your head upon the seat
it was cool and you were tired
so you had yourself a little rest
you woke up the next morning
with a crease in your face
and the lukewarm smelly water
tasted awful
you got up
and you went home
hello hallucination,
it's good to see you once again
'cause sometimes I get lonely
and I need a little company
la de da da da da
home

So Pretty
05:05
|
|||
jesse and i were not looking so pretty
we hadn't been well in awhile
we ran out of cash and they ran out of pity
our demeanor lacked what you'd call style
alone in my room with a 100 watt lightbulb
and books i can't find to read
i'm scrapin' bags double-boilin' cottons
i'm lookin' around for my rig
well it's dull and it's bent
and you can't read the numbers
but nevertheless it's my friend
with my belt between teeth
i'm ready to be friendly once again
yeah, yeah
niki, oh niki, so young and so pretty
your dad doesn't know what you are
instead of a habit you should have a hobby
like barbie or bugglegum cards
well what good are the make-up
and what good are makers
if nothing can make you feel good
jesse go, jesse run
please make quick to the bad neighborhoods
i'll wait for you

Summer Cold
04:59
|
|||
try to shake a summer cold
please to sink a sarin probe
and get drunk and merry
and wonder why
and get drunk and merry
and wonder why
to forgive is too hard
to forget doesn't work
takes too long
so get drunk and merry
and wonder why
and get drunk and merry
and wanna die
we waited for the train
but it never came

Pairin' Off
01:44
|
|||
spring is finally comin'
all the geese are pairin' off
here and there a snow squall
but the snow is almost gone
hear the birds a singin'
and the days are gettin' long
kentucky bluegrass growin' green
and girls in miniskirts
spring is finally comin'
all the the geese are parin' off
i guess i like you well enough
perhaps we'll get it on
oh, to infidelity
and the vernal equinox
come on girl, girl cum with me
bring skin and golden locks
spring is finally comin'
we are young and so carefree

Coalminer
06:21
|
|||
coal mine and moonshine
hills of tennessee
with a dirty old car
hillbilly sanctuary
with a dirty old car
in the cab of a truck
in the heart of the world.
hit her if she wakes up
hit her if she cries out
with the butt of your gun
you better cover your ass, man
you better put on the gloves
coal mine and moonshine
you could die from the dust
you could die from the rye
you're sure to die when you're young
but now it's time to have fun
and turn the stalks into fodder
she looks a little like loretta
just like a coal miner's daughter
coal mine moonshine
hills of tennessee
good ol' boys getting drunk
hillbilly sanctuary

The Overcoat
09:53
|
|||
up in the black hills
well, I am an intensive out-patient
without scripts without pills
november was so cold coming down
and I, well I'm all alone
watching the snow fall on the pines
and the smell, the smell of the stoves
burning wood makes me miss better times
and I'm reading the overcoat again
and I feel just like a clerk
maybe better but more likely it's worse
nothing seems to work.
semi's from the mill
are rolling by with freshly cut pine
they don't stop for black ice
leaving the lights in this mill town behind
and it's new years' eve
and there's nothing to do and there's no where to go
so i get a pass from my counsellor
to go walk in the snow
may be going in circles again
but it's hard to say
'cause my tracks keep on filling up with snow
and they fade away
